Urodynamics Services at Chesapeake Urology

Urodynamics is a series of diagnostic tests that evaluate the function of your bladder and urethra. These tests may be recommeneded if you have urinary incontinence (leakage of urine), neurogenic bladder, recurrent bladder infections, slow or weak urinary stream, incomplete bladder emptying or frequent urination. Urodynamic studies help your doctor determine the source of bladder control symptoms and the best course of treatment.

Your doctor will decide which of the following diagnostic tests should be performed to help diagnose and treat your bladder control symptoms:

  • Uroflow: Measures the speed and amount of urine you void.

  • Cystometrogram: Evaluates how your bladder holds urine, measures your bladder capacity, and also determines how well you can control your bladder.

  • EMG: Measures how well you can control your sphincter muscles and determines if they are working in coordination with your bladder. EMG patches may be placed near your rectum to record muscle activity.

  • Pressure Flow Study: Determines if there is an obstruction in your bladder or urethra.

  • Videourodynamics: This study is a combination of the above tests with the addition of video pictures which uses contrast dye to visualize the bladder.

About Urodynamic Studies

Your urodynamics appointment will take approximately 60 minutes. A Chesapeake Urology urodynamicist will be there to guide and support you throughout your testing, answering any questions you may have and ensuring your physical and emotional comfort. You will be asked to arrive at your appointment with a comfortably full bladder for testing.

  1. At the start of your testing, you will empty your bladder into an uroflow meter that automatically measures the amount of urine and flow rate.

  2. The urodynamicist will then perform a post-void residual, which involves placing a thin tube into your bladder to measure the amount of urine remaining.

  3. Your urodynamic study will then begin. This study will evaluate: how much your bladder can hold, how much pressure builds up inside your bladder as it stores urine, and how full it is when you feel the urge to urinate.

  4. Finally, the results of your study will be reviewed with you by your doctor at your next visit and a course of treatment determined.

Betty has 17 years of experience in urodynamics and is certified in performance and interpretation of urodynamic/video urodynamics. Her areas of specialty include: Neurologic conditions and disorders (multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, and Parkinson disease), incontinence, voiding dysfunction and neurogenic bladder conditions. 

Betty explains,"I enjoy performing urodynamics because it allows me to be hands on while investigating the cause of life altering symptoms that patients may have been dealing with for years. I feel fortunate to be in a place where I have the opportunity to spend quality time with patients, listening to their story and comparing it to the information we have given them to document every day events such as fluid intake, frequency of visits to the bathroom, accidental leakage and finally, urodynamic findings. 

I'm able to share with patients hope for treatment, and also let them know they are not alone or isolated due to their condition.  This is a common occurrence to many others who also seek help. We want our patients to have an excellent experience and leave with the knowledge they need to look forward to a better quality of life."

Sondra is Chesapeake Urology's urogynecology nurse practitioner. She specializes in incontinence services including management of stress urinary incontinence and overactive bladder treatments as well as pelvic floor disorders. She performs urodynamic studies for women experiencing incontinence and voiding dusfunction.
